JON’S PERSPECTIVE

Did you know that most Krav Maga Instructors don’t focus on throws and takedowns?

…BUT in the real world, there are times when striking alone isn’t the best or safest option!

When I first started training, I was taught that Krav Maga is primarily a striking system—and that’s absolutely true. The focus is on efficiency, aggression, and neutralising threats quickly.

But what happens when striking isn’t appropriate, isn’t effective, or isn’t an option at all?

Imagine a security professional or police officer dealing with an aggressive individual. Striking them could escalate the situation or even land them in legal trouble.

Picture someone in a self-defence situation who is overpowered, grabbed or unable to escape—they need an alternative to simply hitting and hoping for the best.

That’s where throws and takedowns become essential.

Why Do Takedowns Matter in Self-Defence?

Many real-world situations make striking difficult, inappropriate, or ineffective:

  • When you can’t legally justify striking. Sometimes, controlling an opponent without hitting them is the best or only option.
  • When someone has grabbed or restrained you. If an attacker is holding onto your clothing or body, a throw can be the fastest way to break free.
  • When escape isn’t possible. If running away isn’t an option, you may need to control the attacker until help arrives.

We can objectively observe from hours of CCTV and mobile phone footage that grabbing and clinching are common in real self-defence situations. Yet many Krav Maga classes do not train for this reality.

Why Don’t Most Krav Maga Instructors Teach Throws & Takedowns?

There are three main reasons why this crucial skill is missing from many training programs:

1️⃣ They assume it’s not needed.
Because Krav Maga is a striking system, some instructors believe takedowns don’t need much focus. But real-world evidence shows that having an option beyond striking is essential.

2️⃣ They don’t have a structured way to teach it.
Many instructors can perform a takedown but struggle to teach it dynamically and safely within a Krav Maga framework. Demonstrating a throw is one thing—integrating it into training is another.

3️⃣ They’re unsure about their own skill level.
Most instructors spend more time refining their striking than their throws and takedowns. Without a structured training approach, these techniques don’t get practised enough to be confidently taught.
